These days, more of us are deciding to stay in our homes.  Here are 5 ideas that will help you make sure your most important investment stays in great shape and increases in value over time.
 
1. Exterior Inspections - Do an exterior inspection and a crawl space inspection on your house twice each year.  The crawl space should be covered by a plastic vapor barrier and the area should be dry.  Your qualified termite inspector or a home inspector can do this for you.  They will look for water leaks and termite tunnels on your walls, as well as making sure that your insulation is in place.  When inspecting the exterior of your house, look from the top down. 
  • Look for missing shingles on your roof.
  • Are the gutters working propperly?  The best way    to do this is to take a look the next time it rains hard.  Is water overflowing?
  • Look for wood rot on the trim of the house and the siding if it is wood or fiberboard.
  • Is the paint peeling?
  •  Is the caulk pulling apart around the windows or doors? 
  • Are the bushes and shrubs up against the house.  They should be 2' away.
 2. Do you have a programmable thermostat? -  It will automatically lower and raise a home's air temperatre when you are at work or sleeping.  If used propperly, the energy savings will help offset the cost for the programmable thermostat in less than a year!
 
3.  Do you need more  
storage in your house? - One creative solution is to hang shelving from the ceiling of your garage.  It won't take up any of your space and can be used for items not frequently needed.
 
Handy Tip of the Month 
 
Tarnished Metals

A homemade paste for cleaning slightly tarnished metals is equal parts of salt, vinegar and flour. Rub paste on with a soft cloth, rinse off and buff. More stubborn stains might need a rubbing with salt and vinegar or some lemon juice.

A:  All manufacturers will have an expected life.  That said, the life of products depends on making sure that they were properly installed, on external conditions and on regular maintenance.  Give us a call if you have questions regarding what materials or products are rated better than others.
